Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology has been the star at the electronics trade shows this year. At this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, the biggest product introduction was made by Sony, with an OLED display. The new 11" Sony TV is called the "XEL-1". The Sony HDTV is extremely thin (less than 1/10") and light-weight. At the FPD International Show in Asia in November, Samsung introduced a 31" OLED HDTV with 1080P resolution and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

Companies like LG, Toshiba, Matsushita (Panasonic) are investing hundreds of millions of dollars, developing this promising technology. Toshiba plans to sell a 30" OLED display in 2009. Samsung says that they will sell large screen OLED sets in 2010.

Eastman-Kodak holds a several patents in OLED technology. Manufacturers will probably be required to pay a licensing fee to Kodak for every OLED TV sold. Eastman-Kodak just introduced the OLED Material EK-GD403, which utilizes green dopant technology. The technology advance is a stampede.

There is a lot of money to be made. According to DisplaySearch, in 2007, the market for LCD TVs was estimated at $27.4 billion, while the market for plasma TVs was estimated at $7.5 billion. Most consumers say they want a wall mountable HDTV. However, according to the NPD Group, a consumer and retail market research information firm (NPD.com), only 13 percent of current LCD TV owners and 25 percent of plasma TV owners say their set is mounted on the wall.

"Consumers are drawn to flat-panel technologies for their wall-mounting capabilities, but the difficulty of such an installation often leads them to explore alternatives such as stands or retailer installations." said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis, The NPD Group. But with OLED, the job of mounting the hardware would be much easier, more like hanging a painting on the wall. The hardware weighs a fraction of LCD or plasma.

OLED Performance

OLED displays have already used for some time in digital cameras, cell phones and other devices with relatively small panels, because they are very energy efficient, which is very important in portable devices.

A significant benefit of OLED displays over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is that OLEDs do not require a backlight to function. Because of this, they draw much less power. And because there is no backlight, an OLED display is much thinner than an LCD display.

And because there is no backlight, an OLED system has a larger viewing angle than an LED system, and an OLED display can be much thinner than an LCD display.

The response time for OLED is faster than normal LCD screens. An average of 8 to 12 milliseconds in response time is normal for a LCD compared to 0.01 milliseconds in response time for an OLED. This means that OLED will be less subject to "blur". Blur occurs when there is rapid motion in the programming, such as sports. When the picture changes quickly, the pixels can lag in response.

One of the problems that has limited OLED use was that the blue OLED technology had a short lifetime, but a new type of blue LED, the "PHOLED", has a 20,000-hour lifetime (20-25 years of normal TV use). This was a major breakthrough in the effort to commercialize this technology for the HDTV market.

In theory, OLED displays can be more efficiently manufactured than LCD or plasma displays, meaning that they should not be as expensive. The Sony XEL-1 sells for $2500, but you should remember that the first large LCD and Plasma displays were much more expensive when they were first introduced. If production costs can be cut, the OLED HDTV set should eventually be less expensive that comparable LCD sets.

If the OLED does not live up to its promise, it will not be the first HDTV display to do so. Remember the surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED TV)? Toshiba and Canon were ready to go into production, but patent disputes with a company called Nano-Proprietary killed the technology. That probably won't happen this time. The main obstacle will be the manufacturing process. If units can be manufactured cost-competitively with LCD and Plasma, it should get very interesting.

Learn Digital Photography - Working With Your Camera

Experiment with exposure Digital cameras usually work best in sunlight, just like film cameras. When you move indoors, or into dim light, things get much trickier -- just like film cameras. So experiment.

One thing you can do is try to shoot your subject from different angles, using a variety of different lighting. If your camera allows you to do so, try turning your flash off. If your camera allows what is called "fill flash," I recommend you try that as well. You will find that every once in a while a flawlessly exposed picture is made even better using fill flash. Also, from time to time turning off the flash and leaving the subject somewhat underexposed can add drama to the shot.

Every once in a while, you'll take the same picture three different ways, with three different exposure options, and get three radically different pictures -- and all of them will look good. But you've got to experiment.

If at all possible, bracket your shots, with one shot slightly underexposed, one slightly overexposed, and one "just right." Some digital cameras will do this automatically, but even then you need to practice. If you are expecting the camera to shoot one frame and it shoots three, there is an excellent chance the last two will look like they were taken by a very surprised photographer.

Special features Most digital cameras have a variety of built-in special features. Some will allow you to record sound, some allow you to take short QuickTime clips, and some allow you to experiment with special effects, such as shooting black and white or sepia-tone images. Until you learn the basics of your camera I recommend that you ignore the special features.

Keep in mind that some of these tricks, such as black and white or sepia-toned images, can be done without the camera. Just load up a normal color image in Photoshop and, in a few minutes, you can have perfect black and white or sepia-toned photos. In other words, if you can do it easily in Photoshop, you might be better off concentrating on taking a good color photo, and worrying about special effects later on at your leisure.

On the other hand, you should try out other special effects. For example, if you pan your camera to track a car moving at high speed, the car will be in sharp focus but the background will be blurred, making an interesting picture. Or you can do the opposite: focus on a particular stationary object -- a child flying a kite, a freshly-painted fire hydrant -- and allow a speeding car to enter the frame. You'll then have a sharply focused center of attention with the added benefit of motion.

Silhouettes are another nice special effect. Try taking a photo with your subject in shadow, eclipsing a brightly-exposed object in the background. The reverse -- a brightly exposed subject against a dark background -- can be just as interesting. Getting a good silhouette with film is expensive: you shoot a lot of frames with little or no reward. With a digital camera, however, the only cost is your time and patience, and your patience will be rewarded.

The Scarlet Letter and Symbolism

The Scarlet Letter is a novel with much symbolism. Throughout the novel several characters represent other ideas. One of the most complex and misunderstood characters in the novel is Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne. Pearl, throughout the story, develops into a dynamic symbol one that is always changing. Although Pearl changes, she always symbolizes evil. Pearl symbolizes evil in the story by representing Gods punishment of Hesters sin, symbolizing the guilt and the scarlet letter that controls her behavior, and defying Puritan laws by being cheerful and associating with nature. Pearl represents Gods punishment by her mocking and nagging of Hester. Throughout the novel she sometimes seemed to her mother as almost a witch baby (Matthiessen 104). She is a baffling mixture of strong emotions with a fierce temper and a capacity for evil. With Pearl, Hesters life became one of constant nagging, and no joy. The child could not be made amenable to rules. Hester even remarks to herself, Oh Father in heaven if thou art still my father what is this being which I have brought into the world (Hawthorne 89)? Pearl would harass her mother Piyasena/Pine 2 over the scarlet A she wore. In time, Hester was subjected to so much ridicule from Pearl and others that she was forced into seclusion. Pearl represents the sins of both Hester and Dimmesdale. Pearl is said to be the direct consequence of sin (Martin 108). Their sins include lying to the people about the affair that led to Pearl. Hester realizes what Pearl represents when she does not hold Pearl up in front of the A. She carries the child around because it is a direct reflection of her sin. Hester is, wisely judging that one token of her shame would but poorly serve to hide another (Hawthorne 48).

Dimmesdales sin is not adultery but not having the courage to admit that he had adulterated. Therefore his is a concealed sin. The scarlet letter amuses Pearl, and also controls her behavior. It is noted that, Pearl has been described in terms almost exclusively of uncontrolled, chaotic passion (MacLean 54). Throughout the novel Pearl is attracted to the A. Even when she is just a baby, her infants eyes had been caught by the glimmering of the gold embroidery about the letter (Hawthorne 90). When Pearl is older and Hester throws the letter on the ground, Pearl yells at her mother until she places the A back on her bosom. Hawthorne says that Pearl is, the scarlet letter in another form; the scarlet letter endowed with life, (95) which proves the she is truly the scarlet letter. Throughout the book the A is the sign by which the colonial authority seek to fix the crime and the criminal (Ragussis 97), although the cloth shows the sin so does Pearl. She is a far stronger device for punishing Hester than Piyasena/Pine 3 the piece of cloth on Hesters chest. Due to her influence, Pearl becomes the chief agent to her mothers salvation. Hester and Dimmesdale share much guilt because of Pearl. Dimmesdales guilt is filled with mental anguish, and serves as a constant reminder of his sin. Dimmesdale is a minister [who] commits adultery and is driven to public confession by remorse (Martin 108). He remains silent so that he can continue to do Gods work as a minister. It is said that he was a guilty character [who] finds empathy in connection with others (Peckham 92). Pearl brings him guilt when he would not stand with them on the scaffold; Thou was not bold! thou wast not true! Thou wouldst not promise to take my hand, and my mothers hand, tomorrow noontide (Hawthorne 150)! Hesters guilt, however, is derived from both Chillingsworth and Dimmesdale. Chillingsworth married a woman who did not love him, which is one of the causes of Hesters guilt. Dimmesdale causes her guilt when he sees her suffering alone for the sin that they both committed. Though they both committed the same sin, only Hesters shines through. Pearl was cheerful due to the scarlet letter her mother possessed. When the breastplate at Governor Bellinghams Mansion distorts the scarlet A into something overpowering and horrible, it is Pearl who points at it, smiling at her mother with the elfish intelligence that was so familiar an expression on her small physiognomy (Hawthorne 99). Even as a child, Pearl is affixed to the letter and, putting up her little hand, she grasped it, [the letter] smiling, not doubtfully, but Piyasena/Pine 4 with a decided gleam (Hawthorne 90).

Pearls tendency to focus on the scarlet letter is fully developed when she mimics her mother by placing a seaweed A on her own chest. Much of Pearls strangeness comes from her exceptional quickness of mind and the abnormal environment in which she is reared with only her mother as a companion. As Pearl develops a personality, she becomes symbolic of the kind of passion that accompanied Hesters sin. Hester tolerated Pearls pretentious behavior but could not find it in her heart to condemn the child. As Pearl thus becomes so closely associated with the letter A on Hesters breast she becomes the embodiment not only of Hesters sin but also of her conscience. Nature is an amusing hobby for Pearl; therefore one of her favorite activities is playing with flowers and trees. She fits in with natural things, and she was gentler here [the forest] then in the grassy margined streets of the settlement, or in her mothers cottage as Hawthorne notes in the novel (202). She is so closely affiliated to nature that the creatures of the forest approach her instead of disperse. The mother-forest, and these wild things which it nourished, all recognized a kindred wildness in the human child Hawthorne notes as Pearl is on a walk with her mother (202).

However, the Puritans believed that anything affiliated with the forest was evil; therefore, Pearl defies their laws by being effervescent and joyful in the woods. Some of the Puritans even believe her to be a demon offspring. So unusual is her behavior that she is often referred to in such terms as elf child, Piyasena/Pine 5 imp, and airy sprite. Pearl is a virtual shouting match between the Puritanical views and the Romantic ways. Pearl is a source of many kinds of symbolism. She is both a rose and indeed the scarlet letter. If she had not been born, Hester would not have had to wear the letter. Pearl is a burden to Hester; yet Hester loves her. She is also her mothers only treasure and her only source of survival. Without Pearl, Hester would have lived a different life, one without the scarlet letter, one without sin, and one without her treasure.

The courses are all the same, so pick one you like before you start - don't go random. Of course, it may not get voted to race on it, but at least you stand at the least a 1 in 12 chance of racing on it. Pick a character and kart you are familiar with, and also a kart that plays to your style.

By 100cc class, you should also be playing in manual mode.

Take Advantage of Everything

There are plenty of places to safely get speed boosts without golden mushrooming everywhere. Corners are a great place to drift and you need to hold the drift for as long as possible (generally until you are straight on the straight you are drifting into), you should also stunt jump whenever you jump, and if you are racing on a motorbike, wheelie as often as possible. Also, make sure you hit the power ups. Online racing is more about powerups than offline racing, as such there's very little chance of taking an unassailable lead throughout the race.

Become a Blue Shell Bomber

If you are leading, you have one thing to fear - Blue Shells. The Blue Shells will automatically hit you with an explosion causing you to lose around 5 seconds. And there's nothing much you can do to stop it. Luckily, you are given plenty of warning, so what I try and do is stop, slow down, and take out as many of your opponents as possible. Drive with the A button (if you're using most steering methods) held down when you become aware of it and aim to eliminate as many of your opponents as possible. Sure, you'll drop down a few places, but at least you won't be miles behind when you recover.

Second Is The New First

With that said, it is far easier to do the classic Mario Kart tactic of remaining in second up until the last corner then overtake. The choice of weapons you get in first is terrible, so if you are to lead from the front, pull away and fast before you get attacked by the Blue Shells.

With all that said, the most important thing is to have fun. Playing your fellow human and beating them is a wonderfully satisfactory feeling in this game, and you have a real sense of achievement. I'll see you online!

F-Zero - Nintendo's Best But Least Known Series

With all of these features, one would have to ask why this series is so underrated and little known. This answer to me is still a mystery. It is a great series and remains as one of Nintendo's best series.
